Congratulations to Al Karasiuk on his induction into the 2023 NWT Education Hall of Fame!

The South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) would like to send congratulations to Al Karasiuk on his induction into the 2023 NWT Education Hall of Fame!

The GNWT has announced the prestigious inductees, and Al Karasiuk is certainly deserving of this honour. With an impressive career in education spanning 35 years, including 31 years in the NWT, Al has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to the students and the community.

As an advocate and education champion, Al has always placed the learning and well-being of his students first. His commitment to inclusive and experiential education is evident in his innovative work at Paul William Kaeser (PWK) High School, where he has served as principal for an incredible 23 years. Al's vision gave birth to the Phoenix School, an alternative study program that has successfully helped countless students graduate high school, especially those who faced challenges within the traditional schooling system.

Furthermore, Al has embraced Indigenous education through language and cultural programming, which are integral to the identity of the Phoenix School. His leadership at PWK has fostered authentic partnerships with students, families, Elders, Indigenous groups, and the community. By actively seeking and valuing their input, Al has empowered them to have a meaningful role in shaping the school's programming, budget, special events, and strategic planning. PWK is now widely recognized as a positive influence and partner within Fort Smith, thanks to Al's commitment to community engagement.

Al's impact extends far beyond the walls of the school. He is always present for his students and the community, elevating their confidence and inspiring them to believe in themselves. Al's unwavering determination, problem-solving skills, and resourcefulness make him a respected leader. His contributions to education in the NWT have been recognized on a national level, as he was named one of Canada's Outstanding Principals in 2012.

Al Karasiuk, thank you for your exceptional service and dedication to NWT education. Your induction into the 2023 NWT Education Hall of Fame is a testament to your incredible achievements and the positive influence you have had on the lives of countless students. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition!
