SSDEC Superintendent honoured with Polar Medal

Last week, South Slave Divisional Education Council Superintendent Dr. Curtis Brown was awarded the Polar Medal at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

The award was presented to Dr. Brown by Governor General Julie Payette and celebrated his accomplishments in his more than 30 years as an educator in Canada's North. The Polar Medal is awarded to individuals whose achievements contribute to preserving northern culture and heritage.

Dr. Brown began his education career in the North in 1987 and has held several roles with increasing responsibilities. Since 1999, he has served as the Superintendent for the South Slave Divisional Education Council.

The Governor General awarded Dr. Brown with the Polar Medal for his long-term and continuing work to improve the state of education in northern Canadian communities. Dr. Brown was recognized for his achievements as an advocate of alternative programming and expanded opportunities for students.

Most notably, Dr. Brown was recognized for initiatives that helped to drive an increase in student outcomes and for the development of the SSDEC's award-winning Leadership For Literacy program.

Additionally, Dr. Brown's efforts have also stimulated the revitalization of local Indigenous languages and their use in South Slave schools and communities.
